Are more expensive wipers better?

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

Consumer Reports has done a study on windshield wipers and how long they last.  Is it true that a more expensive wiper blade is better or not?  They tested a wide range of wipers in several different costs and brands.  A total of 15 different wipers were tested in their study.  There were the Valeo series that ran from $9 to $15 dollars, Anco which was $7 to $10 dollars, and the Michelin which was only $7.

With this test all the wipers performed very well, however none of them really lasted any more than six months and by nine months they were pretty much done.  Overall though the Rainx Latitude wiper which ran around $17 to $24 maintained great performance up to six months.  And in fact it worked well after that, however none of the others did not do near as well after the six month mark.

When the wipers would become older they would normally leave streaks on the windshield, missed spots on the windshield and even smearing.  You can tell an older wiper by looking at it and seeing if it’s cracked.  Even if you don’t use the wipers much, it easy for the sun to bake your wipers and have them cracks.  This is why it’s so important to check the condition of your wipers.

The wipers were tested on a total 185 cars from the consumer reports staff.  When they began the test almost half of the cars already need the wipers replaced, showing that people don’t check their wipers often enough.

Included in the test was a newer model of wiper that has six beam blades on it.  These beam blades are said to have a better performance than the standard wiper blades that are out there.  However these blades will normally cost more than the other blades on the market.  During the testing the results showed that it wasn’t necessarily worth the extra cost.

During the test the experts tested how easy it was to remove and install the new wipers.  It was found that the whole process was quite simple to do.  But three models were a bit tougher to change than the others, and some tools may possibly be need to do the install.  These three were Trico Exact Fit, Michelin Optimum, and Trico Teflon Blade.

The study proved that no matter how much you spent the blades would normally be best changed every six months.  So why go out and spend a lot more money on those wiper blades than you need too.  You can spend less money and the blade will still last six months.  You need to check your owners manual to see what the manufacturer feels you should change you blade too.  Keep up on the checking of your wipers and you should never have problems seeing what’s around you while driving.  If it’s winter out you should check them more often if you use your wipers to remove snow, it’s a bit rougher on the rubber.
