Smashed police cruiser’s windshield only to land in jail

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

A homeless man knew that with this little trick he will definitely go to jail: he took a cinder block, raised it above his head and threw it directly at the windshield of a police car right in front of an officer.

Robert V. Jenifer stated that, being sick and tired of “living on the streets with no food”, he simply didn’t like the treatment at the Frederick Rescue Mission, where he had been accommodated for the better part of one month, and decided that the prison was a better place for him. So he looked for the best way of getting in. Butch Lancaster, another homeless man sheltered at the mission, regards his colleague’s remarks as being at least ungrounded, as they were served two meals per day and had a place to sleep, all for free, which is more than a homeless person can ask for.

Jenifer was charged with destruction of property and sent to jail, with a bail set on $2,500. With no prior criminal record, he is likely to be released within a few month, reported police officers. Confronted with this, Robert Jenifer stated that he will likely do it again, only to get in.

Police officials are not trying to determine whether the whole Frederick mission has a homeless problem that is provoking people to destroy property or become violent, or this one was simply an isolated case. Should psychologists’ analysis prove that such is the case, the residence risks being closed.

Similar cases have been encountered in the past. It may seem way more attractive for some people to not do anything the whole day and yet have a shelter and three meals per day, and this must be what Robert’s main idea was. Living on welfare or, even worse, in a homeless shelter seems a bit unsafe for them, since they do have a responsibility: they have to eat the next day. So why worry when you can just slack around and live your life with no worries?

Yes, for some this is life. Psychologists say that such people can integrate in any group whatsoever, so the inmates will do as well. They will only care about the very basic things in life, so the conditions inside the prison will suffice their needs: having a roof above the head and receiving something to eat is more than they can ask for.
